Tucked into a leafy North Berkeley backyard, this one-bedroom ADU and matching Pod frame a hidden garden. With space in the backyard for an ADU, the saw an opportunity to create more housing for rent and an added revenue stream. The result is a flexible and multi-functional space made to fit the needs of any tenant.
The ADU showcases some of our signature design features: the entryway unfolds into a spacious, open living and dining area, with abundant natural light from the south-facing windows.

The private view into the backyard creates a strong connection between the interior and exterior. The redwood decks act as transitional landings between indoor and outdoor, extending the livable area.

The space was designed with a university student, young professional, or couple in mind and is intended to be comfortable for both living and working.

Clad in low-maintenance corrugated metal siding, we conceived the structures as camouflaged in the lush backyard and selected a two-tone green scheme to blend in with the mature trees onsite.
The accompanying Pod can serve as an office or studio space. The interior is finished with hardwood plywood that gives the space a natural feel and echoes the wood sills on the doors and windows. Glass slider doors continue the inside-outside motif, bringing garden views to the interior.

The client was able to use Type Five’s flexible design system to transform his unused backyard into more housing, fit for a student, a couple, or young professional.
