Originally a garage, this converted backyard home was re-imagined as a flexible, self-sufficient space designed to serve a family across changing needs. With dedicated storage, in-unit laundry, and multiple entrances (including direct street access), it functions as an independent home today, with the potential to house an elder family member in the future.
The clients had been thinking about a new build in their backyard when the Type Five team saw another path: the existing garage. With the right rethinking, a conversion could become more considered and cost-effective, while maintaining their existing garden space. That re-frame shaped the entire project. The flat roof, a direct product of the conversion, maintains the building height established by the original structure, keeping the design clean and the permitting straightforward.

Practicality was built in from the start. Storage and laundry, tasks the garage had always handled, were woven into the plan. The street-side entrance gives the unit autonomy, ready to welcome a tenant or a visiting relative without pulling them through the main home. The result is a space that earns its place on the property today, and is already prepared for whatever comes next.
